To transform arid lands in to agricultural production through a dam & irrigation system, the Uda Walawe Reservoir Development project was implemented.

This project was started in 1950s, the project involved constructing the Udawalawe Dam across the Walawe River to create the Udawalawe Reservoir, supplying water for irrigation, powering hydroelectricity, and supporting resettlement of landless farmers.
There are two major objects of this project was to protect the immediate catchment and create a refuge for elephants displaced as a result of the Walawe Basin Development project.
This arrangement leeds to accumulate more Elephants in Udawalawe National Park, which is a good point for Naturalists, Zoologists and animal lovers and specially children.
